Unveiled – Special Edition Bentley Mulsanne Speed Blue Train

Ever heard of a race named ‘Blue Train’? Well, neither did we before coming across this piece of news that Bentley has unveiled a special edition Mulsanne called the Mulsanne Speed Blue Train. This special edition Mulsanne is launched to commemorate the ‘Blue Train’ race win by the Bentley chairman himself, Captain Woolf Barnato in 1930, 85 years ago.

To make its debut at the Techno Classica show, the Blue Train Mulsanne will be one of its kind Bentley. The Mulsanne Blue Train will get a revised grille integrated with a square mesh pattern that reflects the original Speed Six. While the 4-door luxury sedan features an all-black alloy wheels, the rest of the car is left untouched apart from a special black paint.

Though, what is exciting in the special edition car is the interiors. The Mulsanne comes with the “Blue Train 85 Years” tread plates and an “expertly crafted veneer image of the original Bentley Blue Train Speed Six.” The first model will also come with a personalized ‘hamper’ with Robbe & Berking silver plated cutlery, Haviland Limoges porcelain crockery, LINLEY crystal champagne flutes and an Angora picnic rug.

Richard Charlesworth, Bentley Heritage Collection boss says, “The Blue Train is one of the most famous and celebrated cars in the world, and it perfectly embodies the racing spirit of the Bentley. Woolf Barnato was a three-time Le Mans victor, but winning the Blue Train race captured the public’s imagination, and fuelled the legend of the Bentley Boys.”

The production of the Bentley Mulsanne Blue Train special edition is limited to four units only and they are available for customers in continental Europe only.

Video – Lexus performs synchronized drifting in Dance of F

Lexus as a brand doesn’t hold any significance to India, for the brand is not sold in our country. But the Toyota owned luxury arm can be seen plying on our roads occasionally. But why are we talking about the Lexus then? Simply because they have revealed a video that’s so beautiful and crafted that you can’t stop praising the drivers and the Lexus team.

The video named ‘Dance of F’ features the F-series from the Japanese luxury car manufacturer. The video is shot at the Fuji Speedway and one can see 5 cars – a Lexus LFA, two Lexus RC F coupe street cars and a pair of Lexus RC F race cars – all finished in white paint, doing highly synchronized stunts like drifting and car placement.

Among all five, the Lexus LFA is the brand’s halo car and takes the centre stage in this choreographed video. Though the LFA is not the first F model, it is certainly the first model to be created with real street type credentials for the Toyota’s premium brand. Apart from the LFA, the other F-branded cars include the IS F and GS F sedans and the Lexus RC F coupe.

While the Lexus LFA comes powered by a high revving 4.8-litre V10 unit producing 552hp and 480Nm of torque, the Lexus RC F comes with a more powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine that generates 467hp and 528Nm torque. The LFA comes mated with a six-speed automated single-clutch manual gearbox, while the Lexus RC F is mated to an eight-speed automatic.

Video – Aston Martin Vantage GT3 rechristened GT12

And eventually Aston Martin bows down to the issue raised by Porsche. All those who remember, a couple of weeks back, Porsche, the German Supercar manufacturer created a lot of furore by announcing that they will sue Aston Martin, the vintage luxury car maker from Britain over the ‘GT3’ moniker. Bowing down to the issues, Aston Martin has quietly changed the name of the recently unveiled Vantage GT3 special edition as Vantage GT12.

The Vantage GT3 was unveiled almost two months ago, and immediately gathered lots of controversy surrounding its name. Apparently, Porsche wasn’t too happy with the GT3 moniker and contacted Aston Martin to face legal consequences if they go forward with the name. Aston decides to avoid the lawsuit and renamed the car as the Vantage GT12.

Aston Martin also released a new video clip, replacing the original video with the changed name and also revised the original press release for the same. Rumors are that the Aston Martin will also replace the track-only Aston Martin GT3 moniker with another name. But no such reports have been confirmed by the company yet and the website still lists the racecar as GT3.

The Vantage GT3 is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine that produces 600hp and 625 Nm of torque. Based on the V12 Vantage S, the GT3 weighs almost 100 kg less that helps the car to go from 0-100 kmph in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 297 kmph. The production of the Vantage GT12 is limited to 100 cars and will go on sale from the third quarter of 2015.

Rosberg angry as Hamilton wins Chinese GP

And the Chinese GP came to a glorious end with Hamilton taking his second victory of the 2015 F1 season and the fourth in China. But all was not hunky dory for the team Mercedes as Nico Rosberg, Hamilton’s teammate, who finished second, accused Hamilton of putting himself ahead of the team. Rosberg has said that Hamilton deliberately delayed Rosberg as Vettel was closing in.

“He compromised my race,” said angry Rosberg, who asked the team on the radio to ask Hamilton to speed up. “By driving slower than was necessary at the beginning of stints meant Sebastian was very close to me.” Sebastian Vettel, who won his maiden race for Ferrari a couple of weeks back finished third ahead of his teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton on the other hand, played down Rosberg’s claims – “It’s not my job to look after Nico’s race,” he said. “My job is to control my race. I didn’t do anything intentionally to slow any of the cars up. I just focused on myself.” The statement from Hamilton got a rebut from angry Rosberg – “It’s now interesting to hear from you, Lewis, that you were just thinking about yourself.”

Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas from Williams took fifth and sixth position, while Romain Grosjean secured seventh position to help win Lotus their first points of 2015. Felipe Nasr finished eighth for Sauber, ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Marcus Ericsson of Sauber finished at 10th, before the race finished under the safety car, after Max Verstappen’s Torro Rosso engine failure.

After the Chinese GP, Hamilton sits comfortably at 68 points ahead of Ferrari’s Vettel, who is at 55 points and teammate Rosberg’s 51. On the constructors’ table, Mercedes leads with 119 points ahead of Ferrari’s 79 and Williams’ 48.

BMW i8 wins prestigious World Green Car Award

Is it a co-incidence or is it the fate, that after the BMW launched the acclaimed i8 hybrid sportscar in India, it has won the prestigious World Green Car Award for the first time. Crowned during the World Car Awards ceremony during the New York International Auto Show, this is definitely not the first time for BMW to win these famous awards in the Green car category.

Before the i8, BMW i3 won the Green car award last year preceded by BMW 118d win in 2008. The BMW i8 was also selected as one of the finalists in the category of World Luxury Car, but she couldn’t win. This is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle to be manufactured by the BMW Group. BMW claims that the i8 combines the performance of a sports car and fuel consumption and emission of a compact vehicle.

BMW i8 was recently launched in India for Rs 2.29 Crores (ex-showroom) and comes with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, combined with an electric motor. The petrol motor is equipped with the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology while the battery for the electric motor can be charged at a conventional power outlet or simply while driving. BMW i8 touches 0-100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds thanks to an output of 362hp.

BMW also claims that the i8 can be driven up to 37 kilometres on pure electric power before it runs out of juice. The power is sent to all the four-wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The electric motors uses 2-speed gearbox, while the petrol motor engages the rest of the 6 gears. To be bought via the CBU route, the i8 hybrid will be sold in limited numbers in the country.

Talking of the World Car Awards, they have been presented since 2005 at the annual New York International Auto Show. The awards are judged by 75 journalists from more than 20 countries.

10 new plug-in hybrid to be added to Mercedes portfolio by 2017

Electric cars couldn’t pick up the pace as some trade pundits expected them to do some 5 years ago. But that didn’t discourageMercedes-Benz from their social responsibility and they are already selling 10 lug-in hybrids, which according to Mercedes will reach 20 cars by 2017. The impact of hybrids is so much so, that Mercedes has reduced its fleet emission by 40% in Europe alone.

The German auto giant has already started re-branding its Hybrid range of vehicles with the letter ‘e’, like for example the C-Class hybrid is renamed as C350e. Joining the current range of vehicles will be the first plug-in crossover in the form of GLE apart from the E400 Hybrid, B-Class Electric drive and smart Fortwo Electric drive EVs.

“Plug-in hybrids offer our customers the best of both worlds; in the city they can drive in all-electric mode, while on long journeys they benefit from the combustion engine’s range. In addition, hybridisation makes the combustion engine more efficient and brings with it a special type of dynamic performance – making driving an absolute pleasure,” said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The current hybrid range of vehicles includes-

2012: smart fortwo electric drive
2012: E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID
2013: SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive
2013: S 400 HYBRID
2013: S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID
2014: C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID
2014: B-Class Electric Drive
2014: S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID
2015: C 350 e

India-Bound 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Spied

Mitsubishi Motors is still looking for success in both the global and local market. While they created a successful and a substantive name in the SUV market when they launched the Pajero in the Indian markets, their other SUV ventures, including the Outlander and Montero failed, which forced the Japanese manufacturer to concentrate only on one product – the Pajero.

Selling in the majority of markets as the Pajero Sport, a heavily camouflaged prototype of the same has been spied recently by our friends at the Worldcarfans. Slated to be launched next year, the Pajero Sport facelift will be based on the Triton/L200 and will be more aggressive in design as compared to the current Pajero which has started looking dated. One can easily spot more angular surfaces as compared to current boxy design.

We believe that like the chassis, the engine will also be borrowed from the L200 which is powered by a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel engine capable of producing 154hp power and 380 Nm of torque. But if based on the Triton, the Pajero can get a 2.4 litre petrol unit (which we hardly believe could make its way in India) along with a trio of turbo-diesel motors with power producing capacity upto 181hp and 430 Nm. The power will be sent to the wheels via a 5-speed manual and automatic gearbox along with an option for 6 speed manual gearbox.

The big buff SUV is expected to make a global debut at the Frankfurt Motorshow slated to start in September 2015, while the sale can commence in the as early as 2016.

New 2015 Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire: Petrol Review

Now the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire has been around for a while and has comfortably led the sub-4 metre sedan market ever since the second generation was launched in 2012. In fact even after the debut of cars like the Honda Amaze and the more recently Hyundai Xcent and the Tata Zest coming in, it continues to be the best-selling car in its class. But it has been gradually falling behind especially considering the features that these new offerings are coming with and keeping that in mind, it was time for Maruti to give its entry-level sedan offering an update. The changes on the refreshed Swift DZire are few but are they really substantial?

Diesel Cars between 5 to 10 lakhs – Bounteous choice

With the price of petrol increasing day by day, most of the potential car buyers are looking out for diesel run vehicles. As such, the demand for the economical diesel cars has been on the rise. More and more auto makers have come up with diesel engines to meet the rising demand. The Rs 5-10 lakh range is a high budget range and one will be pampered by the options in all car segments alike.

In the hatchback segment we have the Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ritz, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Figo, Hyundai Grand i10, Toyota Etios Liva, Tata Vista, Nissan Micra, Fiat Punto Evo, Chevrolet Beat and Sail, Renault Pulse and the Mahindra Verito Vibe. These compact hatchbacks are equipped with lots of comforts and features. Most of them offer decent power and handling with very high mileage. Their small size and easy manoeuvrability makes them ideal cars in crowded cities or narrow lanes and they can be squeezed easily into any parking slot. All said, unlike the novel foreign automakers, the old Maruti cars will emerge as extremely fuel efficient and also they do promise low maintenance cost.

Moving on to the sedan segment, one can choose from Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Verna, Honda City, Tata Zest, Toyota Etios, Ford Classic and Fiesta, Tata Indigo eCS, Volkswagen Vento, Chevrolet Sail, Nissan Sunny, Skoda Rapid, Fiat Linea, Tata Manza, Mahindra Verito and Renault Scala. The recently launched Maruti Suzuki Ciaz also fits into the said budget. Of all these, Maruti Swift Dzire is the cheapest sedan at just Rs 5.79 lakhs and Ford Fiesta is one of the costliest at Rs 10 lakhs. The Tata Indigo eCS is the most fuel efficient diesel sedan in India with an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 25 kmpl.

The SUV and MPV segment have many good diesel cars on offer. Some of them are the Honda Mobilio MPV, Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra Xylo, Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Thar, Mahindra Quanto, Renault Duster, Ford Ecosport, Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Etios Cross, Tata Safari, Tata Sumo Gold, Tata Aria, Tata Winger, Movus, Xenon XT and Venture, Tata Safari Storme, Fiat Avventura, Chevrolet Tavera and Enjoy, Nissan Evalia, Premier Rio, Volkswagen Cross Polo and Ashok Leyland Stile. The list here almost seems never ending. Renault Duster and Ford Ecosport seem to be the most popular of these. Their dashing looks alongside good driveability and reasonable maintenance places them high on the sales chart. But one has to be prepared for the huge waiting period if going for these cars owing to the high demand. Closely behind these are Maruti Ertiga, Tata Safari, Safari Storme, Mahindra Quanto, Xylo and Scorpio.
